Iron Infusions

Iron Infusions at Sandringham Medical Centre

At Sandringham Medical Centre, we offer iron infusions for patients who require an alternative to oral iron. While iron tablets are usually the first step in treating low iron levels, some people don’t tolerate them well or don’t absorb them effectively. When tablets aren’t suitable—or when iron levels need to be corrected more rapidly—an iron infusion may be recommended.

All iron infusions are performed in our Treatment Room by one of our doctors, supported by our experienced nursing team. An IV line is placed into a vein near the elbow, and the iron is administered slowly through this line. The infusion itself generally takes around 30 minutes, but please allow approximately one hour in total. This includes time for preparation and for monitoring your blood pressure, heart rate, and temperature before and after the infusion to ensure your safety.

Before we can book an infusion, you will need a consultation with one of our doctors. During this appointment, your doctor will review your symptoms, blood test results, and medical history to confirm whether an iron infusion is appropriate. If so, you’ll be given a prescription for the iron medication, which you must purchase from your pharmacy and bring with you on the day of your infusion.

Please note that new patients must attend a standard consultation before an iron infusion can be arranged.
